Making the world better through education

My Story

Discover my journey so far

In the third year of middle school; when you’re about 14-15, you get to pick a profile with subjects that interest you. The choice was between the natural sciences, arts and culture, and economics. I was always interested in business and selling but back then I felt like I didn’t know enough about myself and the natural world to choose the profile with economics. So I chose the natural sciences, I learned about myself, about the world, the universe, and now I teach those same subjects to the next generation. However, I never lost my interest in business so this time around, I want to learn more about marketing, sales, and building a product that helps others.

Mission and vision

Right now I help students to get better at chemistry and pass their final exams. In the future, I would like to help other teachers improve their teaching skills and become more comfortable in front of the classroom. After that, I aim to become director of a school and steer the school into a successful future. At the same time, I will build a business because I know that the combination of skills from a full-time educator and an entrepreneur can help many people.

Ali Abdaal; a top-rated business and lifestyle YouTuber I follow often talks about a book from Austin Kleon called: “Show Your Work”. In a nutshell, Kleon advises documenting and sharing your journey, embracing vulnerability, focusing on process, using social media for connection, and treating your work as continuous learning. I hope that I will be able to help and inspire people by sharing my progress as a teacher and entrepreneur as well.

I know what I’m doing

Expertise

I’ve been teaching for seven years now. During working hours I spend much of my time preparing classes, presenting, managing groups, and evaluating student materials. I have the knowledge and know-how to help students increase their chemistry grades and pass their final exams with flying colors.

Coaching also plays a large role in teaching. Students often need help overcoming mental barriers that prevent them from achieving their desired grades. For the past two years, I’ve been a coach and mentor as well. I got to help people to figure out who they are; what their strengths and weaknesses are; set goals, make plans, reflect, and keep them accountable.

It has been my dream to make a positive contribution to education in the Netherlands since I was a student in middle school. There is a direct correlation between the quality of the teachers and the quality of education and last year I got to train a first-year teacher in training. The best way to learn teaching is by doing it. She got to help with- and even take over some of my classes. The whole process was made possible by open communication and it was amazing to see how much she grew as a teacher during her internship.

Testimonials

At the end of the school year, I asked my students to fill out a questionnaire about what they thought about me as a teacher.
As you can see, most students gave me a ten out of ten. They think I am friendly, understanding, and leading, rather than strict and corrective.

I also asked them why they gave me this grade and here are some of the things they said:

“Mr. van Merode gave me a lot of good tips, such as the tip with the mindset”

“He taught well which made you understand it quickly”

“He is very good at explaining and also very funny”

“He helped you very well and was always there for you”

“I thought the teacher was Super Sigma Rizz (that means I like him quite a bit as a teacher)”

Personal

As a person, I’ve always been curious and enthusiastic. There was a time in middle school where I lost my curiousity because I didnt see the point in trying to get good grades in school. When I started my studies as a teacher in chemistry however, I got my fire back. I love learning, growing and experiencing new things. I especially like sports, watching TV and spending time with my family. I’m organized and idealistic; I feel called to serve a greater purpose in my life. I want to leave the world better than it was when I entered it.
